Deciding whether or not to chase down the Black Talon Catalyst is an important decision for players to make. Sure it increases the potency of Black Talon, but is it worth it? To help players decide here’s what the Black Talon Catalyst does and where to get it.
What It Does
The Black Talon Catalyst introduces a new perk to the Black Talon sword:
Reversal – Blocking shots after guarding increases Crow’s Wings damage for a brief time.
As mentioned before, Crow’s wings is the projectile that players can launch when performing a Heavy Attack. This helps players take advantage of Tireless Blade, where powered sword kills generate sword ammo. For players maining this sword, the Catalyst is definitely worth the bump in DPS.
How To Find It
The Black Talon Catalyst is a random drop during Strikes, Gambit, and Crucible matches. There’s no indication what the rarity of this item is, but it’s in line with other Catalysts and is fairly rare. This is especially true if there are other Catalysts that have the potential to drop.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way to increase drop rates at this time. The player is simply going to have to grind those activities until it drops. Completing higher difficulty matches may help, but it may be better to do whatever is in line with the player’s skills.
Upgrading
Once the Black Talon Catalyst finally drops the player will want to begin upgrading it. This is done by killing 500 enemies of any kind using the Black Talon sword. Fortunately, these kills can be retroactive, meaning if the player achieved any Black Talon kills prior to obtaining the Catalyst they’ll count.

Otherwise, the player will probably want to grind low-level enemies in PVE or possibly jump into PVP modes to get the 500 kills. It only counts if the enemy dies as a result of damage received from the Black Talon.
Tips
Obtaining and upgrading the Black Talon Catalyst is relatively straightforward, albeit somewhat of a grind. For Catalyst hunters, it’s a common strategy to synergize grinds and upgrades. For instance, the Skyburner’s Oath Catalyst will also drop during Strikes, Crucible, and Gambit matches. Players can grind for both Catalysts to drop and then in the process of upgrading one, cause the other to drop. This cuts down tremendously on Catalyst collecting.
If the player’s sole focus is the Black Talon Catalyst then using the Black Talon as often as possible will cut down significantly on the upgrading grind. The weapon is strong in PVP so running Gambit matches is probably the most efficient way to find and upgrade the Black Talon Catalyst.
