After admitting that the weapon has shipped with a bug which made it so overpowered, Destiny 2 developer Bungie put the Prometheus Lens into Xur’s inventory, allowing everyone to buy it and use it in PvP. And use it in PvP they did as the statistics from the latest Trials of the Nine event show that the majority of Destiny 2 players used the OP weapon to help them secure kills and wins.

According to Destiny 2 statistics site trials.report, the Prometheus Lens was used in a whopping 98% of Trials of the Nine matches (292,072 out of 296,592) over the weekend, across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The weapon was responsible for 90% of all kills (9,583,267 out of 12,731,956) as well. The stats for the second most-used weapon on the list, Sins of the Past, utterly pale in comparison. Sins of the Past was used in 54% of matches (159,230) but was responsible for just 4% of kills (398,663).

The dominance of Prometheus Lens in Trials of the Nine - or any other Destiny 2 Crucible matchup - will not continue in future. Bungie nerfed the weapon during the latest weekly update as developer acknowledged that although Prometheus Lens is a lot of fun to use in its overpowered state, it “breaks” the Crucible. It means that players can’t use any other gun other than Prometheus Lens or else they’ll be at a significant disadvantage, which is hardly fair.

The OP fun may be over, but fans will hope that Bungie is working to make sure that nothing like this ever happens again. Introducing new weapons into the game always comes with a risk because it’s difficult to test every possible use and therefore it’s difficult to fix every issue prior to release. But if things as big as this are missed, it can totally throw the game out of whack.

And although Bungie may have made Prometheus Lens available to everyone as a stopgap, for a little while, going up against the weapon was an absolute nightmare for players who didn’t have it. It just highlights why balance constantly needs to be looked at, before and after a weapon is released and how not doing that can be a very big deal indeed.

Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
