Despite some story elements being vaulted with the release of The Witch Queen, Bungie has made it apparent that the story that started in Beyond Light is the heart of the narrative focus. This has been made even more evident with the story elements and locations featured within The Witch Queen expansion, bringing places like Mars back into explorable areas for players. With numerous solar bodies already possible to explore within our Solar System, it’s hard not to imagine what new locations Lightfall will bring to the game. With the Witness’s imminent arrival, several ideas can spring to mind.

Fundament

Integral to Destiny 2 lore is the planet Fundament, where the three Hive Gods, Auryx, Savathûn, and Xivu Arath, originated from long ago when they were still of the Krill species. Having discovered the Worm Gods and taking their larvae, the Hive was effectively born. These three sisters became Gods bent on following the Sword Logic - the belief that existence is a struggle and any entity that cannot prevent its defeat should be destroyed. Emerging from Fundament, the sisters set out on a course of galaxy-wide destruction and conquering to feed their parasitic worms and spread their beliefs.

With the defeat of Auryx and Savathûn throughout the Destiny and Destiny 2 story campaigns, players will likely soon encounter the last of the Hive Gods, Xivu Arath. With The Witch Queen campaign opening the door to the arrival of the Witness - an agent of the Darkness, and the Hive Gods themselves being corrupted by its influence millennia ago through the Worm Gods, exploring Fundament in future installments may not only help set the lore of recorded history straight but offer some way to defeat the powerful entities approaching the Sol system.

The Pyramid Ships

The Witch Queen ending campaign made it apparent that the Witness was on its way to the Sol System with the gloves coming off, ready to save the residents of Sol. While little is known about the Witness, as Savathun offers contradictory information about the Witness’s relationship with the Darkness, what is known is that the Witness is compelling and maybe a physical incarnation of the Darkness on this plane of existence.

Throughout Destiny 2, the Pyramid Ships have been a looming threat that many tried to study, understand, and control. There have been quests that dealt with parts of these mysterious vessels and their powers related to the Darkness; however, their entirety has yet to be fully explored. With the Darkness and Witness set to enter the Sol System fully, and if the Lightfall expansion deals with the fall of the Light, visiting these ships may provide ways to counteract the Darkness’s power or reverse the damage it may cause.

Hive War Moons

Billions of years ago, after the corruption of the Krill into the Hive, they took to the stars, where the Hive began violently subjugating and destroying lesser civilizations they deemed unworthy. In their conquests and extermination, the Hive hollowed out moons and planetoids that they had conquered and repurposed them into training facilities, breeding grounds, and shipyards for the Hive fleet. These satellites traveled through space, discovering civilizations ripe for conquering, and would link their energies with the Hive army to annihilate entire worlds.

Hive War Moons haven’t been seen in Destiny 2 yet, but their history and lore are spread throughout the story and seem tied to the Hive God Xivu Arath, who has also been referenced but has failed to appear in-game. Having defeated both Auryx and Savathun, it’s only logical to believe that Xivu Arath will be the next Hive God for Guardians to confront. If the War Moons are tied to her and her forces, exploring them in Lightfall could be essential to stopping Xivu Arath directly or learning more about ways to end the Hive threat before confronting the Darkness.

The Distributary

The known home place of the Awoken, which evolved from the Human race, was created from the energy of a black hole in a massive battle between the Light and the Darkness. Time flows differently within the Distributary, and in this pocket universe, the Awoken have flourished for thousands upon thousands of years. With so much time passing and allowing this civilization to thrive and grow, especially with science and technology, they may be one of the most advanced races within the Destiny universe.

Since the Distributary was created through a catastrophic battle between the forces of the Light and the Darkness, it stands to reason that with the Darkness’s impending arrival in the Sol System, the Distributary could help fight the coming evil. What power and technology the Awoken have at their disposal can only be theorized at this point; however, if Lightfall sees the arrival of both Xivu Arath and the Witness, the Guardians may need the help of the Awoken, which could warrant a visit to their dimension.

Destiny 2’s Lightfall is set to be an explosive story expansion to continue the saga between the Light and the Dark. With its title being Lightfall, there are profound implications that the forces of Light will face a devastating crisis as the Witness and Darkness descend upon the Sol System. Visiting locations with a strong Darkness presence in eons past, such as Fundament, Pyramid Ships, Hive War Moons, and the Distributary, could provide exciting places to explore and perhaps the secrets to stopping the evil before it conquers everything.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Stadia.
