Lightfall will take players to the hidden Neptune city of Neomuna, populated by humans who escaped the Collapse and have evolved separately from those living in The Last City. What was clear from the Destiny 2 showcase of this expansion is that Neomuna is not like The Last City or any other location before it, especially the Witch Queen. According to game director Joe Blackburn and assistant general manager Dan McAuliffe during a recent interview with PC Gamer, these differences were intentional.

According to McAuliffe, one of the main reasons for Neomuna’s cyberpunk design is to create separation from The Witch Queen: “Rather than give [players] another terrarian sort of environment, we asked what would be a really strong change of pace. Go up. Go modern. Go fabricated instead of grown.” The verticality of such a living, breathing city (which isn’t something commonly seen in Destiny) plays well with the Destiny 2 Strand subclass, but a populated city is also something brand new for the universe. With Neomuna, players are “finding something that has never been touched,” says McAuliffe, meaning that this version of humanity has never been touched by the Light. At the same time, they have never been touched by the Darkness either.

Many originally thought the Cloud Striders were the one to teach Guardians Strand, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. What draws players here, though, is that Neomuna is under invasion by Calus and his Shadow Legion. How they were discovered and why The Witness is attacking remains to be seen, but everything about Lightfall is as mysterious as Witch Queen but completely different in design too.

Whereas perhaps the biggest threat of Witch Queen were the Hive wielding the Light, Destiny 2’s Lightfall will see players come face to face with the Tormentors: huge creatures who dwell within The Witness’ Pyramid Ships. With their inclusion here, Blackburn says, “we’re showing what these disciples and followers of the pyramid look like. Some of the most ancient, most converted ones.”

These enemies are described as sharing DNA with Rhulk, the Vow of the Disciple Raid Boss, and that Bungie set out to “keep that bar really high” with Tormentors. These are the enemies every player will need to focus fire on. But between the city, the enemies, and more, Lightfall is not The Witch Queen. Many fans may be just as excited, if not more so, with this new direction though.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
