However, there were some other interesting details that came from the audio file datamine as well. For example, the audio files suggest that the Destiny 2 factions and faction leaders will have a greater role to play in Year 2, beyond simply serving as Faction Rally vendors.

According to the audio files, players will be doing much more for the Factions beyond simply hoarding renown and then clearing Lost Sectors. Apparently, the Factions will send players on jobs that involve collecting and trading materials. It’s unclear what these jobs will be, but hopefully, they don’t simply involve scouring the patrol areas for Phaseglass Needles or Dusklight Shards.

In addition, the audio files suggest that players will be able to craft Faction armor and weapons, perhaps with the materials they collect. Since Destiny 2 returned to random perk rolls on weapons and armor, being able to craft gear could be a huge boon. In Destiny 1, the factions had some of the best weapons available, and many players would collect hundreds of tokens just to get the perfect roll on a Hung Jury, for example.

Story-wise, it sounds as though Asher Mir is partnered up with Dead Orbit and is not a fan of Earth. It’s possible that other planetary vendors will align with the other two Factions (New Monarchy and Future War Cult), but no voice lines were found that reference any additional partnerships. The data mine did, however, find some voice lines from random Tower inhabitants referencing the Factions.

As of right now, it’s best to treat this information with a grain of salt. It’s entirely possible that these voice lines were left over from prior work or were scrapped at some point in development. Right now Faction Rally is on a hiatus, as Bungie tries to figure out how it can best work in Destiny 2.

But if these voice lines are real, it sounds as though Bungie might be headed in the right direction. Most players seem to agree that the factions were a great part of Destiny 1 and relegating them to a grind-heavy event was disappointing. However, with random rolls and crafting there is the potential to make Faction Rally more rewarding.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
