In a lengthy Q&A session with Game Informer, Bungie’s Steve Cotton and Scott Taylor revealed (or at least teased) a lot about the upcoming Forsaken expansion and the Year 2 update that will release alongside it. The two also explained how mass shader deletion will work when it comes to Destiny 2 on August 28th.
Once the update goes live players will be able to delete shaders in stacks of 5. As we said, it’s better than nothing but hardly what most were expecting when Bungie revealed that mass shader deletion was on the way.
What isn’t clear from this new detail is if there will be any way to speed up the deletion process when selecting shaders in bulk. If so then that’s not too bad, but hardly ideal. Some players have hundreds of versions of a certain shader, so even deleting them in groups of 5 is going to take a lot of time.
What is most confusing about this feature is that Bungie will be introducing collections to Destiny 2 as a way for players to reacquire items they have already collected, albeit for a price. They can “buy” shaders and apply them for either legendary shards or bright dust (depends on the source of shader).
Considering that, it doesn’t make any sense why Bungie wouldn’t allow players to delete their whole stack of shaders. If a mistake is made, that player can buy back the number of shaders they want – no harm, no foul.
The only explanation we can think of is that Destiny 2’s shader system is too complex to support the ability to wipe out a block of shaders, or rather a way for players to choose how many they want to delete. And so the best Bungie could do was increase the option to 5 at a time.
Destiny 2: Forsaken releases September 4, 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
