In its weekly blog update, Bungie did not go into much detail about the new Nightfall difficulty, but it was a confirmation that Bungie is in fact planning to add new PvE content in Season 10, despite some rumors that Season of the Worthy could be leaving PvE content behind in favor of a season of only new content coming to the PvP side of the game.

Bungie said it would detail more about the Grandmaster difficulty in the coming weeks but for now said that it “will test even the most proficient Guardians.”  Destiny 2’s Hardcore PvE players are sure to appreciate that, because as the game has progressed from the initial leveling and power grind from the Shadowkeep expansion this past fall, even the Legend difficulty of the Nightfall has become less difficult.

That is thanks to the fact that each season has only added an incremental power increase of 10 and the Power bonus that is granted by the seasonal artifact. Both those facts have kept players at a competent Power level that allows them to continue to engage with even the game’s hardest content.

There is surely a tension between players who are happy with being able to stay at the higher levels of the game at all times, even season to season, and continue to engage with pinnacle activities like the Nightfall on a regular basis with little to no additional level grind. But on the flip side are those players who want to be challenged, and this new Grandmaster difficulty sounds as though it was created to do just that.

The other challenge on Bungie’s hands will be to make the Grandmaster difficulty worth doing. The higher tiers of the Nightfall allow players to farm exotics and Ascendant Shards reliably, so it will be interesting to see how Destiny 2 will incentivize players to engage with this new pinnacle difficulty of the Nightfall.

Season 10 begins on March 10, 2020.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
